Message from the Disaster Management Office
‘Today is “Disaster Prevention Day”.’ (2024.9.1)
September 1st is ‘Disaster Prevention Day’. The Great Kanto Earthquake occurred and more than 100,000 people died due to fires and collapsed buildings on Sep. 1st, 1923. In the Tokai region where we live, a large earthquake along the Nankai Trough could occur at any time. Last month, the Nankai Trough Earthquake Extra Information (‘Rinji joho’) “Mejor Earthquake Advisory” was announced for the first time. In addition, damage is still occurring in various places due to Typhoon No. 10. We hope you will use this day as an opportunity to think about and prepare for flood and earthquake disasters, such as checking your house’s earthquake resistance, fixing furniture, evacuation sites, timelines, and stockpiles, etc. (2024.9.1 9:30)
‘Caution as Typhoon No. 10 approaches’ (2024.8.28)
Typhoon No. 10 occurred in the early hours of August 22nd. Although the movement speed is slow and the predicted course has still some variation, it is possible that it will make landfall on the Japanese archipelago with strong force around August 30th. Heavy rain fell and damage has already been caused in the Tokai region before the typhoon made landfall. Depending on its path, it could cross the Tokai region and be affected by strong winds and rain around the end of this week. Please continue to pay close attention to typhoon information and weather warnings and prepare for this typhoon. (2024.8.28 7:00)
The calling period for special caution of Nankai Trough Earthquake Extra Information (‘Rinji joho’) “Mejor Earthquake Advisory” has ended.’ (2024.8.15)
Since no particular changes have been observed since the earthquake with a seismic intensity of lower 6 occurred on August 8, the Cabinet Office and other organizations have announced that the calling period for special caution of Nankai Trough Earthquake Extra Information (‘Rinji joho’) “Mejor Earthquake Advisory” has ended at 5pm on August 15.
However, the probability of a Nankai Trough large earthquake occurring within the next 30 years is said to be from 70% to 80%, so a large earthquake around Nankai Trough could occur at any time. It is important to be aware of this and continue to prepare for earthquakes on a daily basis. Click here for information about “Nankai Trough Earthquake Extra Information” (in Japanses). ‘Congratulations on your admission’ (2024.4.3)
To all the new students, congratulations on your admission to Nagoya University. The Disaster Management Office has a request for all of you who are starting a new student life with hope for the future in your heart. A major earthquake along the Nankai Trough will cause a major disaster around the Tokai region including Nagoya University in the near future. In addition to this, recent years have seen frequent occurrences of wind and flood damage due to torrential rains and typhoons across Japan. When studying at Nagoya University, in order to protect lives from earthquakes, heavy rains and typhoons, and to respond appropriately to disasters, it is necessary to select housing, take indoor safety measures, prepare emergency supplies, and confirm evacuation methods and guidelines for evacuation actions. In addition, there are many things in the university that are dangerous during an earthquake, such as experimental equipment, chemicals, and heavy fixtures. Don’t think of earthquake disasters and wind and flood damage as someone else’s business, and be prepared in advance. Please be sure to read the Nagoya University Disaster Prevention Guide and the Earthquake Manual that will be distributed to everyone. We will send you an email to remind you of your safety in the event of a earthquake disaster. For new students, the email will be sent to the email address assigned to each student by Tokai National Higher Education and Research System. Please set your smartphone etc. so that you can receive it anytime, anywhere.
